Introduction--What Is GPS?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space age navigational system that can pinpoint your position anywhere on the globe, usually within a few yards or meters. This amazing technology is available to everyone, everywhere, day and night, and best of all, at no cost for use of the navigational data. GPS uses a constellation of 24 satellites in precise orbits approximately 11,000 miles above the earth. The satellites transmit data via high frequency radio waves back to Earth and, by locking onto these signals, a GPS receiver can process this data to triangulate its precise location on the globe.

Map Projection
Map projections are attempts to portray the surface of the earth or a portion of the earth on a flat surface. Some distortions of conformality, distance, direction, scale, and area always result from this process. Some projections minimize distortions in some of these properties at the expense of maximizing errors in others
Manual Mosaicking

Aerial Photography
Since the expansion of commercial aerial photography in the 1940s, aerial surveys have become an integral part of modern mapping technology, in large part replacing extensive surveys in the field. With current digital mapping capabilities, acquiring fast, accurate imagery for the development of maps is now not only essential, but cost-effective. Whether you need to update your mapping for a proposed highway system, a wetlands study, or tax assessment, you face the challenge of choosing the best technology and service for your investment. What are the best tools and methods of aerial photography, and how do you obtain low-cost, high-quality service?

Canada - The Columbia
In 1962 BC Hydro was created by the Province in part to develop hydroelectric and water storage projects under the terms of the international Columbia River Treaty. Some impacts from the construction of dams in the Canadian portion of the Columbia River Basin became evident right away. For example, flooding and the creation of reservoirs had an immediate impact on the availability of suitable habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife species. Other impacts took years to become obvious. For example, decreased productivity in Kootenay Lake and the Arrow Lakes Reservoir occurred when nutrients were trapped upstream by dams. The change in the food web was a key factor in declining kokanee populations.

European Security Magazine
Because acoustic signatures from surface and subsurface targets must be carefully assessed and analysed for decisionmaking, today’s submerged platforms require advanced sonar equipment to form part of submarine C4ISR and specific RSTA functions used to detect, track, and classify the spectrum of targets. Within this scheme, information derived or fused together from multiple source data must be rapidly disseminated, either in realtime or near real-time, by various means to other forces and units afloat and ashore as well as to the command and control pyramid (at whatever level) for interpretation and processing by humans or by automatic means to shorten the Observe-Orientate-Decision-Engage (OODE) loop.
Getting Better Geocoding
Geocoding is one of the best tricks you can do with GIS. What's not exciting about watching a file of sterile tabular address data suddenly take shape and illustrate themselves on a city map? But mention to a colleague that you're trying your hand at geocoding, and you'll likely see a quick flinch, maybe even a shudder. I've seen veteran ESRI Tech Support staff – people who laugh in the face of projection problems and license server administration – shy away from the topic. Why the drama? Like many subjects, the more you know about geocoding, the more success you'll experience with it.

Major participants in SCIGN include NASA/JPL, The United States Geological Survey (USGS), and The University of California San Diego, operating under the umbrella of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). Chief sponsors of the SCIGN network are the W. M. Keck Foundation, The National Science Foundation, NASA, and the USGS. Currently, SCIGN is in the process of identifying and selecting candidate sites for installation based on the DOTS3 map.

Opening Session at ESRI
The plenary session of the ESRI Conference 2004 kicked off with a familiar message from Jack Dangermond. He charged attendees with getting to know one another, as the week would focus on sharing knowledge. This year's theme, "The Language Of Geography" was used to denote that we use languages to describe our world, and geography is being seen as a new language. ESRI is 35 years old this week, and is still debt-free and profitable, with 1,000,000+ seats of software and 4400+ employees worldwide.
Day Two - ESRI Conference
After Monday's opening day, the reporting of the ESRI Conference takes on a strange shape as the reporter tries to pick from the various events occurring across the convention center and simultaneously visit countless product booths to make sure that the most important news is covered. The news from Tuesday includes coverage of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Plenary and the plans of Tele Atlas after the acquisition of GDT in early July.

A Different View of Software
Advances in technology are creating the potential for wireless systems to use radio spectrum more intensively and more efficiently than in the past. These rapid developments are being driven by the high level of connectivity demanded by the market. People would like to have the same broadband capabilities they do at their PCs, while maintaining the wireless freedom that their cell phone provides. Unfortunately, conflicting standards and soaring deployment costs have limited wide scale adoption of next generation wireless/cellular technologies.
