You can go with Business Map Pro or Arcview 8.1 with Business Analyst as an add-on extension. Not knowing your experience in GIS, I would suggest you do exactly what you are doing now asking questions. Second thing to start in on is what is involved with GIS, i.e. hardware, software, metadata, data, the list goes on. The third thing is to understand why you need GIS? Actually, think of it this way, what decision making information is a GIS package going to hopefully supply you with that your current software process can not do.

GIS is a fantastic tool to support the management level decision making. Therefore it is important to know what decisions can support, check out from www.esri.com GIS store the book ArcView Means Business. Right now it may cost cheaper at Amazon.com.

Good Luck and feel free to email if you need any more assistance.

Susan,
Do a thorough check on what you want to do with GIS. It can be a powerful tool or a waste of time, money and effort. Check out those that offer simplicity in use and with many links to other datasets so that you can access as much data as possible for business analysis. Cadcorp SIS is one of the best around for your purpose.

Topstax,

SIS is a fine product, but unlike those noted above comes with NO business GIS data nor focused business tools. The biggest advantage of BG packages is the data available and custom business queries that are included.

Further you say that "Cadcorp SIS is one of the best around for your purpose " but we don't know what purpose is intended!!!

I agree entirely that your goals need to be clearly stated ahead of time, and that your data sources will be critical. Another package is MapInfo which generally has a lot of 3rd party data providers and some decent statistical tools.

cheers!
