If someone can help me, I need to know wich are the most common standards used in a GIS environment.

To elaborate on Mike's response to your question, the members of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), using a consensus process, define and agree on interface and encoding specifications/standards for the geospatial industry. The majority of the currently adopted interface specifications ( are designed to be integrated into Internet deployed (such as by using a web services framework) applications. An example would a geospatially enabled portal that access spatial content from multiple, distributed repositories. All of our standards are content model/format neutral and vendor neutral. The OGC specifications are designed to help solve content and service interoperability issues. All of our specifications are freely avaiable for download and there are no restrictions on their use.

If you are looking for content standards or data models, I would suggest looking at the work of the FGDC.
