Plotting GPS Points Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

I've been trying to plot the GPS points that I've taken using a Garmin GPS device on the BING maps basemap in ArcMap 10. This is proving to be difficult.

Unfortunatley, I do not know the coordinate system of the coordinates and do not have the GPS device to check.

16 37.838

-22 54.020

That is a sample coordinate and cutting and pasting that in to Google Earth plots exactly the correct point. Looking at the Properties of the point, Google seems to do some conversion to this. (Should display the coast of Sal,Cape Verde.)

Can anyone offer any advice on how to proceed?  I want to plot the points in ArcMAp and use the Bing Maps Base map.

These look like Lat/Long (Latitude & Longitude) in degrees & decimal minutes.

16 37.838 = 16 degrees 37.838 minutes (+ is north of equator; - is south)

-22 54.020 = -22 degrees 54.020 minutes. (+ is east of Greenwich; - is west)

I will assume that the GPS receiver was set to capture the location in order of Lat/Long.  Therefore Lat =  16 degrees 37.838 minutes NORTH and long = 22 degrees 54.020 minutes WEST.

If the GPS receiver was set to capture the location in Long/Lat, the numbers are reversed.

The best way to check is use Google Earth and zoom to the area where you believe the data was captured.  At the bottom of your screen, Google Earth will display the Lat/Long of the centre of the display.  Us this to confirm the order the data was captured in.
