Methods to detect changes using remote sensing Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

Hi everyone,

Hope this is the right place to post this question.

I'm a new student to GIS and remote sensing and was hoping someone could provide me with some information or websites on the methods to detect changes on the earth's surface using remote sense data.

thanks

I am not sure what software you are using so I would direct you to Remote Sensing of the Environment by Jensen.
Change detection is a rather simple process were you define the range of DN's of the one raster to another. There are two methoods 1) Supervised "User defines the DN range" 2) Unsupervised "program defines the DN range".

There are some great sites for remote sensing and explanations of use of multi spectral data to perform land classification and other uses including change detection.

The best is:
http://rst.gsfc.nasa.gov/Front/overview.html

From there you can find references and others. Keep in mind that there are also some good things from ESRI Image Analysis to work with.

Always start with the basic images and then use more sophisticated sensors to build your area of interest and probable changes (good for most man made things). You can detecd a lot with your own eye and then move into classification of images from IR sensors to do vegetation and minerals analysis (mainly for non man made things or the natural environment).

Try gisdevelopment.net and look at the articles they have posted. You would get some understanding here.

hi there,

it is quiet simple process. lots of techniques available. but the most popular one is by image differencing, you subtract the two classified images.
