Standards for Metadata Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

Are there any guidelines or thoughts even on what a minimal, core, mandatory etc. metadata set would be?
(eg. title; abstract; bounding geo coords; metadata language; metadata characterset; responsibile party name; responsible party address; themecode and reference date) These requirements mentioned in the example are strictly ideas from ISO, but are there any other ones?

Especially for the "Public Health" sector? Any ideas or comments, suggestions?

Thanks,

That's an interesting question. In the U.S. The FGDC (www.fgdc.gov) and OpenGIS Consortium (www.opengis.org) may have answers to your question.

A few commments:

First off, while FGDC can give some pointers, that site is down. I suspect that it's been taken down along with other sites like USGS due to security issues. See http://www.geotimes.org/current/WebExtra1106.html. It's too bad none of the GIS sites thought to post that as news ; )

You might also look at: http://www.tenlinks.com/MapGIS/reference/best_practice/metadata.htm, a listing of metadata sites/articles

and

FYI-- You might want to look at this link to find out about the order that reinstated internet services for the FGDC, USGS and other affected government sites.

Yeah, er, that was weeks ago!!! This question was asked when the site was down.

BTW, although GIS Cafe includes this old news under "GISCafe's Resources for a World in Crisis " the USGS website going down had exactly nothing to do with terrorist attacks or homeland security, but rather site security.

I'm glad to get a rise out of someone! This list has been quiet for weeks. I just noticed that the USGS site was active again recently, so thought I'd make mention of it.

Am moving the announcement off the Home Page
