Don't use Oracle Spatial with SDE it is better to use just Oracle Spatial and then you are not stuck with ESRI as a client and go for a real enterprise solution involving different GIS apps which allows you better interoprability, also it is a lot cheaper. MapInfo, Cadcorp SIS, GeoMedia all link to Oracle Spatial direclty and using SDE on Oracle will not allow these to use access it unless it is set up in a specific way which is a pain and does not add anything to the functionality.
