Sharing GIS Data - Opinions Needed! Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

I'm an undergraduate student at Sheffield Hallam University; who, for a project is studying ways to ease the sharing of GIS data between organisations in the UK.

I'm doing a little background research, and was wondering if you could help me?

What I would be asking you for, is answers to 5 questions that I have written out. They are hopefully easy questions that won't take too long to answer!

I realise that you must be busy, but have to emphasise that this would help my project along greatly. The questions are included below - thank you for any help you can give me.

Please feel free to answer here, Private Message me, or send email to pop dot chris at gmail dot com

Thanks again!

What GIS software package(s) do you use? - ie. ESRI (ArcInfo), AutoCAD, MapInfo, Other in-house applications:

Does the role of the software you use compliment other stages of work? ie. Do you only use GIS software for certain stages of analysis? How big a part of research in a project does your GIS software play?

Would you agree that sharing data between organisations (such as yours) could benefit working with GIS?

Do you feel that there are technological complications that inhibit 'easy' data sharing? Ie. Is the process to complicated / time consuming?

Currently, a lot of GIS packages are designed to visualise data on screen, as map overlays, and so on. Do you think your organisation / work could benefit from software that adds a degree of 'problem solving' or 'decision support'? Ie. software that could perform advanced calculations, but have an approachable interface?
