Hi,

I am looking to learn to use some GIS techniques, specifically to calculate road distances from postcodes to different facilities. I have some data at my disposal and would like to calculate a postcode's distance from any supermarkets to supplement my analysis. Where am I best off starting in terms of software? My goal is to take the data I have as a sample and infer consumer behaviour based on demographics and distance to various supermarkets. I am happy using SPSS to carry out the majority of the statistical analyses but would like to know the most effective and simplest tool for my aims.  

If anyone has any experience in this and can advise that would be great.
