Deltek acquires Axium

June 19th, 2014 by Susan Smith

Deltek CEO Mike Corkery talked to AECCafe about the recent acquisition by Deltek of Axium, provider of accounting and project management solutions to more than 2,200 A&E firms throughout North America.  This acquisition strengthens Deltek’s market leadership position in the A&E industry and extends its reach into the largest segment of the architecture and engineering industry within North America – firms with fewer than 250 employees.

Axium’s product Ajera has complementary functionality to Deltek’s Vision product. While Deltek has had success with marketing to small, fast-growing A&E firms, Axium has been servicing this market segment and will benefit from the ability to extend their products to the larger companies.

Where Deltek comes in is that small and medium-sized A&E firms need an integrated and powerful ERP system that can be implemented rapidly and managed cost-effectively with minimal IT investment.

“The products are a bit different in what they deliver to the market, and they appeal to different segments of the AEC market,” explained Corkery. “The Ajera product does an excellent job of delivering data to the project manager and to allowing a firm to engage broadly across the organization. The Vision product has significant horsepower and has multi-currency capabilities and financial back office capabilities that the Ajera product doesn’t have. We think it’s a natural migration path for customers. A smaller firm that starts with Ajera can migrate to Vision over time if it makes sense for them as the business matures, but the Ajera product services them well.”

The primary reasons for upgrading to Vision would be to have different capabilities than the Ajera product offers. The Ajera team is developing their product to take it up market with some of those more sophisticated back office tools on their roadmap. “We’ve been developing the Vision product to take it down-market and we have a pretty exciting ability called Navigator we’ve developed that lays over Vision that is for project managers,” said Corkery. “We can now develop tools that they leverage off the best of these two products to have the right solutions for customers.”

Axium customers now have at their disposal the entire Deltek suite, and Deltek customers receive the power of Ajera and its functionality.

Deltek is committed to maintaining the Axium facility in Portland and has expanded their presence there with more Deltek employees. The Axium team is already integrated into various functions of Deltek.

(From the press release) Together with Axium, Deltek now includes:

  • Powers the Complete Project Lifecycle: Deltek delivers all of the capabilities needed to manage the complete project lifecycle for fast-growing A&E firms including CRM, resource planning, project management, financial management, and business performance analytics.  With the ability to manage and streamline their operations through Deltek’s comprehensive A&E-centric solution, firms of all sizes have the capabilities they need to compete effectively, grow revenue, and maximize profits.
  • Ensures Projects Are Delivered On-time and On-budget: Deltek offers intuitive, mobile-friendly tools built for the A&E project manager that make it simple for project teams to manage and collaborate on projects anytime and anywhere so they can be delivered on-time and on-budget.
  • Delivers a World-class Return on Investment: Deltek’s cost-effective, out-of-the-box system can be up and running quickly with little to no IT investment, providing business value to A&E firms in a matter of weeks.
