SPEED Portal Recognized by ACEC New York

(New York, N.Y. -- April 18, 2012) Gannett Fleming Engineers and Architects, P.C., GeoDecisions® – Gannett Fleming’s geospatial technology division – and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) received a Diamond Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York’s (ACEC New York) 45th annual Engineering Excellence Awards.

The team was recognized for the development of the Searchable Property Environmental E-Database (SPEED) portal in the Surveying and Mapping Technology category. Available publicly at http://nyc.gov/speed, SPEED is a geospatial application that helps identify vacant properties and potential environmental cleanup and brownfield redevelopment opportunities. The Diamond Award is the highest honor bestowed in each category.

SPEED is a first-of-its-kind portal for exploring environmental information on thousands of properties in an intuitive, map-based interface. It is New York City’s only technology application that enables its users to view, query, and generate reports on historic land use and environmental conditions and offer a visual display of properties through a single source.

“The functional benefits of the SPEED application are positively impacting both the environmental and economic conditions of New York City communities,” said Shaminder Chawla, assistant director at OER. “It enables real estate developers, community planners, government agencies, and other interested users to review historic land use and environmental conditions relevant to potential redevelopment projects.”

Using the power of geospatial technology, SPEED users are able to access a variety of historic property information in just a few clicks. It has enhanced decision making for property investment and remediation planning. Developers are able to use SPEED to search for properties that match specific criteria, such as location, size, and environmental history. SPEED is a significant initiative of PlaNYC, New York City’s sustainability plan for 2030.
