Intrado and GIS Data Resources Work with New York State to Improve Address Data for 9-1-1 and the Public

LONGMONT, Colo. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 22, 2015 — Intrado, a leading provider of 9-1-1 technology solutions and a subsidiary of West Corporation, announced completion of one of the largest address point mapping projects in the United States. Intrado partnered with GIS Data Resources (GDR) to map nearly five million structure location/address points in 57 counties for the State of New York’s Office of Information Technology Services (ITS). This expansive project took nearly two years to complete.

ITS enlisted the help of Intrado and GDR to create new address points and to standardize, validate, and enhance the accuracy of existing address points across the state, which covers 54,000 square miles and is the home of more than 19 million citizens. All of the State’s address points are now in accordance with the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) addressing standards and guidelines for Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1).

“It was a privilege to work with ITS and Intrado on such an important project,” said Tony Alex, Executive Vice President of Business Development, GDR. “The State of New York has put into place one of the most comprehensive and accurate GIS-based addressing platforms in the country, and as a result the general public and the State’s public safety community will realize the benefits of this effort for years to come.”

One of the unique uses of the data from this project is a geocoding service NYS ITS built that also provides consistent and high quality location results for non-emergency purposes. By using the same address data for purposes other than 9-1-1 call routing, any discrepancies in the location information can be found and resolved well before the data is used in an emergency situation.

“Intrado is at the forefront of advancing 9-1-1 across the country, and the State of New York’s Street Address Mapping Project is a great example. This initiative is one of the largest address-point validation and creation projects of its kind, and is providing highly accurate location information for Enhanced 9-1-1 and NG 9-1-1; in effect, reducing response times and improving the future of 9-1-1 services across the state,” said Steve Lowe, Senior Vice President, Intrado.
