Timmons Group, a leading provider of geospatial solutions, contracted with Port Tampa Bay, Florida (PTB), to provide GIS enterprise managed cloud hosting solutions.  Since 2002, the Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) has provided ports throughout the U.S. with millions of dollars in port security development projects related to GIS and other geospatial technologies.

Timmons Group began the project with an evaluation of the PTB’s current GIS for server architecture and made recommendations for improvements. Timmons Group proposed an architecture that utilizes Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host the necessary infrastructure and provide the required security and access required by PTB. Services that will be provided to PTB include securing stable connections for all PTB staff and departments, geodatabases, data quality and maintenance, storage, and training for PTB staff.

“We needed an efficient architecture for our GIS data,” said Mike Scott, PTB Senior GIS Analyst. “Upgrading our hosting capabilities to the cloud has really enabled Port Tampa Bay’s departments to work seamlessly and maintain accurate GIS data.”  

The PTB has seen benefits from this upgrade, including more control and access to their servers and workspaces, easy expansion of servers and environment in the future, separation between the web and database server and thus improvement of performance.
