APA Group adds GPS to mobile mapping solution to aid emergency response teams

Rockville—February 10, 2009—Tensing, a leader in geographical and mobile software has announced that APA Group, a large gas and electric utility in Australia, has significantly extended the number of Tensing Mobile GIS licenses and also implemented the GPS Extension for Tensing Mobile GIS. APA Group, with the help of Australian consulting firm we-do-IT, configured and implemented the Tensing Mobile GIS application. Soon following, the additional licenses and the GPS Extension were added to allow each field operator to track their location as they walk along the pipeline to troubleshoot emergencies.

“The goal all along was to have the application track the worker as they walked. They wanted to have Tensing Mobile GIS set up with the GPS functionality,” said Alexander Plomp, Managing Director of Tensing USA. “The Tensing Mobile GIS suite is designed to allow customers to add functionality as needed through our extensions to the standard application.”

The GPS extension to Tensing Mobile GIS will help APA Group quickly locate the defective assets in emergency situations. Out in the field, the field operators will be able to view their asset data in Tensing Mobile GIS. A marker in the map will track the team member’s location, thus they will always know their position as it relates to the assets.

The Tensing Mobile GIS application was chosen by APA Group for field mapping because it required very little customization and has a robust standard functionality. The additional extensions available such as the GPS, Trace, and Redline Extensions allow customers to add functionality as needed. For APA the easy-to-use interface shortened training timeand allowed their less technical staff to quickly adapt to the product.
