Ulteig Receives Award for Exceptional Use of GIS Technology

FARGO, ND -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Jul 29, 2009 -- Ulteig, a multi-disciplined engineering firm, received a "Special Achievement in GIS" Award on July 15 at the 2009 ESRI International User Conference in San Diego. The company received this honor for its vision, leadership, and innovative use of ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology.

ESRI is a company that designs and sells GIS software to approximately 80 percent of GIS users worldwide. ESRI nominates and awards SAG winners based on how they apply and utilize GIS technology. Ulteig is one of only 150 chosen from among the more than 300,000 ESRI user organizations worldwide.

"It's nice to be recognized for the work we do. Very few consulting engineering firms within our region have received this award," said Jon Tonneson, Assistant Vice President of the GIS Team.

Ulteig began offering GIS as a service in 2005.

"Our work has steadily increased since then," continued Tonneson. "Our engineers are becoming aware of the benefits that GIS can offer to their projects."

Ulteig has worked on thousands of projects since 2005 that have utilized GIS technology to collect data and process it. Leveraging the power of geographic data and GIS, Ulteig has been able to spend more time solving engineering problems and less time trying to integrate aerial photography, wetlands, or soils data.

Ulteig recently used its GIS expertise during the historic flooding in both western and eastern North Dakota in the spring of 2009. The company created and published maps of elevation data and potential flooding depths for the local emergency operation centers. Ulteig also provided maps to local utility operators, helping them identify infrastructure that would need to be replaced before the water had receded.

"Our world is being challenged by rapid change," says Jack Dangermond, ESRI president. "GIS technology is increasingly being deployed as a way to understand the issues facing our society. At ESRI, we are always extremely impressed with the work of our users and want to recognize their efforts with our 'Special Achievement in GIS' Award. Their work is a great example of using GIS to improve our world."
