Timmons Group Presenting at 2010 ESRI Developer Summit

RICHMOND, VA – March 22, 2010 – Timmons Group, a leader in geospatial and engineering consulting services, announced today that Chris Gerecke, the Company’s Director of Enterprise Solutions, and Vish Uma, Geospatial Software Architect, will be making user presentations on March 25th at the 2010 ESRI Developer Summit in Palm Springs, California.

Focusing on topics such as map printing for web clients, web-based dynamic thematic mapping, and continuous integration, the presentations are designed to share the experience of Timmons Group’s Technology Division and highlight some of the firm’s key, innovative solutions and techniques.  Brief summaries of the presentations to be made by Chris Gerecke and Vish Uma are detailed below:

“Building a Map Printing Service for Web Clients - Recalling the Journey” - Vish Uma
Most readily available printing map printing solutions for web clients leave a lot to be desired.  To address this pervasive lack of essential features, Timmons Group has built a printing solution which solves the following problems: 1) printing multiple map services over the base map, 2) overlaying different types of map services (e.g., WMS, Bing), 3) printing user-drawn and symbolized client-side shapes, 4) legend support for multiple map services and graphic layers, and 5) different output options (e.g., PDF, image). Vish’s highly technical presentation will discuss the architecture behind the implementation, including the gory details of software design & difficulties involved with building the solution.

“Web-Based Dynamic Thematic Mapping” - Chris Gerecke
Dynamically-themed maps can be challenging, but they are an invaluable data analysis tool, allowing users to visualize available data in ways that make the most sense to them. This presentation will go over a number of available solutions and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Techniques to render such maps on the web-client, the web server and the GIS server will be discussed, as well as mitigation of potential scalability issues. The presentation will also cover a feature-rich solution which maintains the cartographic quality of the rendered map, leveraging ArcGIS 9.3 support for the OGC SLD 1.0 specification. Both the server-side components & client-side (OpenLayers & ESRI Silverlight API) interfaces will be discussed.

“Continuous Integration 101: Streamline Your Software Development Process” - Vish Uma
Continuous integration (CI) practices serve to identify and automate common workflows, streamlining the software development process, reducing overhead costs, and allowing developers to concentrate on the business problem at hand. Starting from scratch, this presentation walks through the process of setting up a basic CI, going over the best practices involved at each step. It will delve into SVN project structure, project directory structure, automated builds, running unit tests, updating configuration files for the deployment environment & the deployment itself. Also discussed will be some of the unique challenges that are posed by the GIS software development process and developing with the ESRI suite of products.

Following the Developer Summit, all three Timmons Group presentations will be posted for download on the ESRI website.  For more information, go to http://www.esri.com/events/devsummit/.
