Bentley Year in Infrastructure 2013 Geospatial Breakout Session

October 29th, 2013 by Susan Smith

Richard Zambuni, of Bentley conducted the Geospatial and Utilities Breakout Session at Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2013 Conference in London on Monday.

“We have software from power source to transmission, distribution and point of service, and also communication,” said Zambuni. “We are also very much on the water utility side, managing the entre urban water lifecycle and are number one in the world in hydrology.”

Ivara, a company Bentley acquired over a year ago, is now the underpinning for their AssetWise Ivara Management System. It is described as “an industrial strength process for developing, implementing and managing reliability improvement strategies for infrastructure assets.”

Ivara is focused on energy and substations, but its capabilities are now being extended to operations. Its dashboard can let you know how the components of assets are performing.

“Within the year, we will be spatially enabling Ivara,” said Zambuni. “Geospatial is becoming a layer that is specific for this operations side of the lifecycle. It is going to be like ProjectWise in terms of being able to go in and see the exact information on parts.”

The areas that Bentley is moving into such as Asset Health Modeling, Reliability Management and Reporting speak to a need for geospatial tracking of assets and also analysis, as well as the foray into operations.

Other products discussed were Bentley’s Map Mobile, a mobile GIS that enables users to work with spatial information without being a GIS specialist, Bentley Map v8i (SELECTseries 4), available in the next release end-2013, Descartes v8i (SELECTseries 5) which will include STM analytics, drape element tool, elevation contour export, and export to raster DEM, and can be used in Esri ArcInfo.
