Stewart Berry of Caliper Corporation talked about their latest release, Maptitude 2014, geographic information system and mapping software.

The main highlights of the product, priced at $695, include better ways to share and visualize data.

New Data

The new visibility features are what users have been asking for, as well as updated and new data sources, having access to updated geographic information that is provided with each release. “We release Maptitude annually so it means they can have the most accurate information, and the information they can’t get elsewhere like annual updates to consumer expenditure totals all the way down to the zip code and census tracks level,” said Berry. “We’ve also pulled data from a variety of government sources so it allows marketing and sales analysts to know the buying power of zip codes and those zip codes that are projected to grow over the 1-5 years. We have demographics projections we include for 2015 through 2020, we’ve also included federal financial data from banking institutions that comply to compliance standards. And we also have health insurance from the health care industry showing where people are insured and the type of health insurance they actually have. “

“All of the demographics we provide are included with the software,” said Berry. “We’re fairly unusual in that respect. We put all features and data into the product, so it doesn’t have an annual renewal fee, it’s just a one-off purchase. Our customers come to us because we have a single product that does everything we need it to do.”

A lot of customers are concerned with cloud security issues, so they want the product to be able to run completely off line which you can do. It also gives you the ability to share elements and to grab data from the web. That’s one of the main features so you can have different backgrounds like aerial imagery, surface topography, and USGS map backgrounds, etc.

“We provide the federal financial data, which is a combination of census data is released annually, and we also include American Community Survey data which is a rolling release,” said Berry. “The five year average is every year. So we update the software each year with the latest census demographics from the ACS – our projections for 2015-2020 are calculated using our proprietary methods each year. And we do this also for consumer expenditure which we base on things such as IRS tax returns and other government sources.”

Caliper has a lot of experience working with huge volumes of government data, and worked with the Census Bureau for the last Census. They used Maptitude to roll out the ability to submit all their geographic edits and changes.

New Map Styles

All the new map styles have been expanded. In the past the only integration with aerial imagery was the Google Earth integration and the Microsoft MSR service maps which was the Alterra Service that has been shut down. “We continued our support for WS service that we didn’t have that previously, but this new implementation supports seamless tile WS services so you can have those as live backgrounds in your maps rather than having to download images and saving those and having to grapple with each image.

Network Analysis and Routing

Network analysis and routing is another new feature with a new revamped “Shortest Path Toolbox” where stops are numbered in the map to more clearly identify destinations. The toolbox is always enabled in default maps, removing the need to change the working layer.

Locating Data

The geocoding tools now support multi-country functionality. Maptitude refreshes the interface with country specific tools such as those for finding, pin-mapping and the Create-a-Map Wizard.

System and Interface

Maptitude supports the latest Windows operating systems, file types and common design elements.
