Artificial Intelligence Integration: “How do you envision the role and impact of artificial intelligence in your industry in 2025, and what steps is your company taking to integrate AI into its operations or offerings?”

Data enrichment and geospatial insights will emerge as critical drivers for trustworthy AI
Organizations are fast realizing the importance of fueling AI models with trustworthy data in order to avoid negative outcomes, with data enrichment and geospatial insights emerging as new priorities. In fact, recent studies show a 22% increase in data enrichment and a 62% increase in spatial analytics as strategies for improving data integrity over the past 12 months, and this is set to grow during 2025.

A company’s internal data alone rarely provides a complete picture. Accurate locations are more important than ever, and by leveraging trusted third-party datasets, data can be enriched – adding depth and nuance to what businesses and AI models already know about places, people, properties, and more. This can include points of interest data, demographics data, detailed address information, and environmental risk factors such as the likelihood of natural disasters.

Automation, that’s what it’s all about, really. That’s what the industrial revolution and the information age have been driven by: Doing things faster or automatically or in greater quantities than when done ‘by hand’.

That’s why organisations strive for digitalisation, AI, sensors, ‘digital twins’, data hubs: Those aren’t useful outcomes in themselves but they can enable ‘the useful stuff’ to be done automatically, faster, more efficiently or more safely – and that’s especially important when government budgets are being squeezed but with the expectation of the same or higher output.

The prospect of more automation is the reason why there’s such hype around AI, not because it gives any insights into the nature of intelligence (hint – it doesn’t) but because it can help with automating things that are more ambiguous and have been harder to automate. That ambiguity though is also what makes people wary of it when those decisions and outputs are hard to scrutinise and validate and are sometimes confidently incorrect.

The geospatial sector has been experiencing a significant transformation, driven by rapid technological advancements, new business models, and growing global challenges that demand more sophisticated spatial analysis and decision-making tools. While no one can predict the future, we have seen some trends in commercial usage as well as during the armed conflicts around the world that suggest what 2025 may bring. In 2025, we can expect the integration of geospatial technologies in traditional workflows, enhanced data availability, and smarter tools to reshape the industry. These changes will impact everything from agriculture and urban planning to climate monitoring and disaster management.

Technological Innovations: “What major technological advancements or innovations do you foresee occurring in your industry in 2025, and how do you plan to adapt or lead in these areas?”

As a technologist at heart and by training, I’m always interested in the technical developments and advances happening in the industries we are a part of. As I look ahead, I continue to believe we will see changes as a result of machine learning and the increasing adoption of AI – which should come as no big surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. Among the areas we are paying particularly close attention to includes feature extraction, agentic AI and the larger landscape of digital transformation.

We have observed that machine learning-based feature extraction is accelerating customer demand for aerial imagery. With that, higher resolution imagery is desired to unlock new insights and increase data accuracy in more and more industries. These new categories of customers are coming to us asking for new and easier integration options that have high performance and availability so that they can build new solutions and workflows. It’s why last year we built out a team particularly focused on new landscape growth because more and more people are understanding how to utilize aerial imagery.

Beyond that, and more broadly, we believe agentic AI will take center stage as a way to boost the benefits of current state GenAI tools and models. Current GenAI solutions have plateaued in their effectiveness in driving productivity for business users. And, agent-based AI architectures can make large models more effective at reasoning in specialized domains, performing computational tasks, and executing on complex workflows. This is both true in the geospatial industry but also broadly and we will be embracing this idea in our forthcoming products.

GISCafe Industry Predictions for 2025 – Leica Geosystems

How are emerging surveying technologies reshaping the surveying industry in terms of the operational landscape and the role itself?

As modern surveying technologies – such as 3D laser scanners and mobile mapping – enable more efficient and precise data collection, they’re also driving fundamental changes in how surveying businesses operate and grow.

Smaller firms are growing into mid-sized companies, which are then absorbed into larger geospatial companies, creating a network of diverse departments that include surveying, environmental services, and beyond. As they expand, successful organisations are adopting digital tools and cloud platforms to connect the dots between surveying data and engineering insights. The benefits also extend beyond internal teams, with these same tools enabling seamless collaboration with external partners like architects and local authorities.

Alongside the advancement of technology, the surveying landscape itself has become increasingly competitive, with surveyors expanding their skill sets to meet evolving demands. While maintaining that core focus on traditional engineering projects like roads and railways, professionals will increasingly augment their services with cutting-edge tools that offer greater precision and expanded scope.
