DeLorme has developed a free GPS-accurate dataset to assist in the Haitian relief efforts.
The company was contacted by numerous aid groups following the earthquake. A team of employees worked through the past weekend preparing a custom dataset utilizing the GPS-accurate DeLorme World Base Map along with aerial imagery, all of which can be displayed within the company’s XMap software and on Earthmate PN-Series handheld GPS units.

ERDAS has updated their Online Web Services to incorporate the GeoEye imagery collected January 13, 2010 (made available for free download). Users can also access the image in ECWP in ArcMap, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, many other thick client packages and web clients by downloading the ECW Plug–in freely available for download on the ERDAS website

A shining example of collaboration comes from Max Samfield, deputy director of the Houston Planning and Development Department, who chose a hybrid approach that requires city agencies to add basic data to a new enterprise GIS, but lets them choose whether to publish more specialized data to the system.
The goal was to “create a repository of newly accurate GIS data delivered to end-users from a central server farm. Agencies then use that scrubbed enterprise GIS data as a foundation on which to build more layers of data using their own specialized information.”

According to an article in today’s New York Times, Americans are using their cellphones and social media like Facebook to make a donation to the Haiti relief effort.
The American Red Cross said it had raised $5 million this way as of Thursday.

The C.I.A. and climate scientists are collaborating to maximize the use of the federal government’s intelligence assets, which include spy satellites and other classified sensors, to gain knowledge into environmental change. Imagery of natural phenomena such as clouds and glaciers that have up until now been considered classified information have been declassified in order to aid in scientific analysis.
