RoadBotics by Michelin

When I made my 2022 GIS Industry predictions last year, I had no way to predict what was actually to come for RoadBotics ourselves – we were acquired by Michelin! After a simply amazing acquisition period, we, RoadBotics by Michelin, are hitting the ground running! And looking down the road, I can see these predictions in the future of GIS and geospatial technologies in 2023.

Our Roadway and AgileMapper platforms transforms ground level imagery, spatial data, and your visual infrastructure into meaningful, interactive maps utilizing artificial intelligence (AI). AgileMapper lets you create and store your own new data as well as migrate existing legacy data.

In the post-Covid environment, geospatial technologies enables adapting to new situations and creating new opportunities at digital speed.

Infrastructure:  Now that we’ve seen first hand the disasters that can occur to infrastructure, transportation, and shipping supply chains as a result of pandemics and climate change induced weather extremes;  geospatial technology has not only pivoted to address them, but now can get a jump on future disasters to mitigate their severity. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) will hugely impact our ability to accomplish this. Reassessing what infrastructure actually consists of, and retrofitting and upgrading existing infrastructure, plus managing it all through spatially aware infrastructure assets management systems, results in making stronger, safer, trackable road networks with accident management data, and also securely hardened utilities infrastructures. And adding to this, constructing NEW, extensive infrastructure systems (like smart and complete streets, and broadband), collectively, is critical to supporting the public’s real world needs. Digital twin technologies utilizing AI and machine learning will greatly improve maintenance, and streamline management efficiency.

Mass Transportation, Supply Chain, and Shipping Logistics:  Supply chain management and logistics is also completely at the whim of real world issues like pandemics, climate change, and transportation and shipping hub congestion. As part of that infrastructure mentioned earlier, mass transportation will hugely benefit from advances in geospatial technologies. From pilot and luggage tracking apps, to flight logistics – meltdowns like we’ve just seen should soon be a thing of the past for both travelers and shipping supply chains. Smart fleets will be vital to this process of rounding out logistics geospatial technology. Likewise, the geospatial industry will continue to focus on issues like the ‘last mile problem’ in deliveries, integrating GIS and BIM, accessibility, as well as reverse logistics from returns, reuse of shipping packaging, and integrating Port Management software with GIS.

Geospatial technologies will continue to be game changers in conservation, sustainability, climate change, and epidemiology – critical to both human and wild environments.

Finally, streamlining geospatial technologies with open source imagery and spatial data, the pervasiveness of smart and action cameras, sensor data, and apps;  produces platforms presenting impactful, accessible, interactive maps for the public, as well as municipal, government, scientific, and industrial sectors.  I am excited to see what will be achieved in the coming year!
