Revolutionizing Precision: Exploring u-blox’s X20 GNSS Platform with Mårten Ström

December 10th, 2024 by Sanjay Gangal

u-blox, a global leader in positioning and wireless communication technologies, has unveiled the X20 high-precision GNSS platform, a groundbreaking solution that sets a new benchmark in accuracy, performance, and security. Following the success of the widely adopted F9 platform, the X20 represents a significant leap forward, designed to address the evolving needs of industries that require centimeter-level positioning accuracy.

The X20 platform offers all-band support, covering L1, L2, L5, and L6 frequencies, along with an integrated L-band receiver. This comprehensive frequency coverage allows the platform to operate seamlessly in challenging signal environments, ensuring reliability across diverse applications. The inclusion of the L6 band is particularly noteworthy, as it supports both navigation and correction services, enhancing the platform’s precision capabilities. For correction services, the X20 provides maximum flexibility, supporting local base stations, real-time kinematic (RTK), Network RTK, precise point positioning (PPP), and PPP-RTK. This wide range of options empowers users to choose the optimal balance between cost and precision, catering to applications in port logistics, machine control in construction, UAVs, and ground robotics like autonomous lawnmowers.

Security is at the core of the X20 platform. With features such as end-to-end encryption, secure boot, and secure firmware updates, the platform ensures the integrity and reliability of its operation. It also incorporates Galileo OSNMA authentication, coupled with jamming and spoofing detection and mitigation, making it a robust solution for critical applications. The X20 is designed with a future-proof architecture, being fully software upgradeable. This capability ensures that the platform can adapt to emerging technologies and evolving industry standards, providing long-term value for its users.

The versatility of the X20 platform makes it a key enabler across multiple industries. It supports precise machine control and positioning in manufacturing and assembly lines, enabling advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles with centimeter-level accuracy. It also provides reliable positioning for drone operations, from delivery to surveying, and enhances performance in applications like automated lawnmowers and industrial robots. Additionally, it supports time synchronization for critical infrastructure systems such as telecommunications, power grids, and data centers.

In my recent interview with Mårten Ström, Director of Product Line Management at u-blox, we explored how the X20 platform is poised to make centimeter-level GNSS technology accessible to mass markets globally. Ström shared the extensive research and development efforts behind the X20, emphasizing its seamless integration with PointPerfect, u-blox’s PPP correction service, which ensures homogeneous correction data performance across all continents. He explained how the inclusion of the L5 and L6 bands enhances signal robustness, making the X20 highly reliable even in urban environments with multipath interference. This innovation positions the X20 as a critical solution for industries that demand high precision, such as autonomous transportation, precision agriculture, and construction.

Ström highlighted that the X20’s software upgradeability allows customers to stay ahead of technological advancements, ensuring their investments remain relevant over time. This adaptability, combined with the platform’s ability to integrate with third-party systems, expands its applicability to a wide range of use cases. For instance, in industrial automation, the X20 can enhance machine control systems, while in the automotive sector, it can enable more accurate ADAS functionalities. The platform is also being adopted for innovative uses in UAVs, where precise positioning and robust security are paramount.

Beyond its technical features, Ström emphasized the platform’s potential to democratize access to high-precision GNSS technology. By making centimeter-level accuracy affordable and scalable, u-blox aims to empower businesses of all sizes to leverage the benefits of precise positioning. He also shared examples of how early adopters are already using the X20 in innovative ways, such as in autonomous drone delivery systems and remote asset management for critical infrastructure.

The X20 made its debut at INTERGEO 2024 in Stuttgart, Germany, where attendees had the opportunity to see the platform in action. Visitors were particularly impressed by its ability to operate in dense urban areas and its compatibility with multiple correction services, making it a versatile choice for applications worldwide. This unveiling marks a major milestone in u-blox’s journey to redefine high-precision GNSS.
