ArcGIS and the Best of all WorldsJune 28th, 2016 by Matt Sheehan
I’ve mentioned many times before in this blog that we are big fans of the new cloud based approach to GIS (WebGIS). As Bill Meehan at Esri describes, connecting desktop, Web and mobile apps via your central GIS cloud based hub provides access, awareness and analysis. Moving from server to platform has many advantages. Its transforming GIS. But today, the reality is that we live in a world of mixed technologies. Esri users have one or a combination of ArcGIS Server, Online, Portal. Web applications tend to be tied to these respective solutions. At WebMapSolutions we have been giving this considerable thought.
We have wondered can we build a super flexible GIS application which provides the best of all worlds. Let’s dig deeper. Imagine field staff who work in remote areas. They need a mobile GIS editing app which works online and offline. Is there an application available which satisfies this mobile requirement but works directly against Server, Online or Portal? We have developed a widget based GIS Web application which is responsive (meaning it works well on a PC, tablet or smartphone) runs on any platform (Windows, Android and Apple) and is offline enabled. The fact this is a widget based Web app means it is super flexible. So how does this provide a best of both world solution? It works against any ArcGIS solution: ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Portal So wherever you have your data published our web app will provide the functionality you need. The fact that it is widget based means it is also super flexible. Adding new functionality – measure, geo-enrichment, redline, editing etc – is simple. We use the analogy of a swiss army knife. The beauty of this GIS web app is that whichever ArcGIS solution you have today, or tomorrow, the application will continue to work seamlessly. Contact us on 801-733-0723 for more information.
