Lost in GIS

August 22nd, 2016 by Matt Sheehan

Let me start this blog post with an age test. Do the following lines of dialogue mean anything to you?

“Oh, the pain, the pain”

“Where are you my hairy friend?”

How about?

“You Deplorable Dunderhead”

“Nickel Plated Nincompoop”

This will mean nothing to the younger generation. But to some of you (and yes I can see you smiling) this means Lost in Space. Forget the movie remake, this was one of the greatest American TV sitcom’s ever made. Filled with terribly wooden actors, predictable story lines, comical monsters (many also seen in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’), cheesy sets .. I could go on. ‘Great American TV sitcom?” I hear you ask. Without question. Why?

Dr Smith that is why!

A simply marvelous character: sneaky, underhanded, greedy, lazy, cowardly. He stole the show. Dr Smith was the reason we watched.

Lost in GIS

I’ll save a Dr Smith discussion for another blog post. Let’s move to the thrust of this blog post: Lost in GIS. The TV show Lost in Space was a space-take on the book the Swiss family Robinson: a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia. The themes of both show and book were lost and alone.

And lost and alone is what we are hearing from many looking to leverage the new world of GIS. We could also add confused, and looking for guidance. GIS is changing. We really have entered a new world, both in terms of the technology and terminology. I see reference to Web GIS, system of engagement, COTS apps. Its all great stuff, but what does it mean, and how do I solve my problem using this wonderful technology?

Walking organizations down the path to success with GIS is one of our key roles as a company. We’ve moved from a pure GIS development company to GIS guides or hand holders. Focusing away from the technology to the problem and the path to a solution with our GIS Solutions Engine and fromWheretoThere for ArcGIS. Technology is only useful if you know how to apply it to solve your problems. On its own technology is useless.

So don’t get Lost in GIS. The technology can answer so many questions you are struggling with today. Help getting started and moving forward can accelerate you to solutions. No more feeling lost and alone.

You knew I would not be able to help myself. We must of course finish with Dr Smith.
