Profits leap at Ecometrica as satellite data firm signs new contracts worth £16m

International governments sign up to use mapping platform for the protection of environmental assets

Montreal/Edinburgh/London, Aug 31, 2017 - Profits at Ecometrica, the sustainability software and satellite data company, jumped almost fivefold as corporates and international governments adopted its groundbreaking earth observation and reporting platform.

The Edinburgh-headquartered firm, with offices in the UK, the US, Canada and Mexico, posted profits of £218,000 in the year to the end of March 2017, up from £45,000 in the previous 12 months. Sales rose 25% to £3.48m, from £2.77m.

However, that could be just the tip of the iceberg as the company sealed new contracts worth almost £16m in the final few months of its financial year.

Adrian Smith, chief financial officer, said: “We're a growing export story, and as we grow, we're also becoming more profitable. Ecometrica is benefitting from more governments and corporates using the Ecometrica Platform.

“New clients include Canadian resource businesses, as gold miners, in particular, look to increase their transparency on social and environmental impacts. But it's predominantly governments who want to safeguard their natural environments. Our ambition is to provide much of the monitoring and assessment technology for the Green Climate Fund that came out of the Paris agreement, and that will help us comfortably reach our stated goal of £10m turnover by 2020.

“Also by 2020, we expect corporates to play a much greater role, as they are taking over responsibility for mitigating climate change. In the US, where the government has taken a step back from climate change action, corporates have stepped forward to fill the gap.”

Mr Smith expects 100% revenue growth in the current financial year and further improvements in profitability. He added: “Agile space data is a huge growth market that will have a knock-on effect across all industries, as well as furthering environmental work, educational and scientific research.”

The firm achieved the growth in profits despite the costs of opening a US subsidiary in April, which did not contribute to income during the period. It has also opened an office in Mexico.

Smaller and more conservative revaluations this year mean that on a reported basis, this year's total comprehensive income couldn't match the £5.3m seen last year when a change in accounting basis distorted the figure. However, they still weighed in at £1.1m, boosting the firm's balance sheet value to £11.9m (from £10.8m).

Staffing levels at Ecometrica rose to 41, from 30 a year ago. They included a number of senior hires and promotions as the company rewarded workers that have played a part in its meteoric rise.

In the last year, Ecometrica was placed 388th on the FT1000 list of Europe's fastest growing companies, based on revenue growth of almost 300% in the three years to 2015. It also made Deloitte's Technology Fast 500 list this year and has won a string of awards for its products.

Ecometrica was placed 388th on the FT1000 list of Europe's fastest growing companies and also made Deloitte's Technology Fast 500 list this year. The firm has won a string of awards for its products, including the prestigious Environmental Leader Product of the Year Award for the second time in a row for its Ecometrica Platform.

Founded in 2008, Ecometrica’s formidable story derives directly from the vision of its founding members and leadership - executive chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Richard Tipper, chief executive Gary Davis and chief product officer Bertrand Revenaz. Backed by a team of recognised experts, Ecometrica has unrivalled experience in environmental sustainability accounting and reporting.

Ecometrica is an end-to-end environmental software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider. Its satellite data and software services, which support all aspects of sustainability planning, operations and reporting by businesses and public organisations, are available worldwide, through offices in London, Boston, Edinburgh, Canada and Mexico.

The Ecometrica Platform, a web-based accounting and sustainability management solution, combines earth observation data from satellites with local information and business intelligence, to bring clarity to environmental and natural resource challenges facing corporates and governments alike. It helps businesses to easily track and map their impact on natural capital assets, like forests and water, tracking supply chain activity, verifying sustainable product sourcing, and environmental reporting to established sustainability frameworks. It makes the terabytes of raw data being sent to Earth by satellites easily accessible, bringing limitless possibilities for its application. It is the only sustainability software with audit-ready assurance from a Big Four auditor (PwC). For the largest customers who get their accounts externally audited, this means avoiding costly pre-audit fees that often run into hundreds of thousands of pounds per year.

Ecometrica provides clarity and illumination on environmental impacts, allowing businesses and governments to make smarter decisions about climate impact and environmental reporting, which helps to build long-term value.
