Check out GeoPlanner from Esri

October 16th, 2014 by Susan Smith

Ken Gorton of Esri talked about the GeoPlanner at Esri UC 2014 in the Plenary, mostly in relationship to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI)’ s work in Africa with the great apes’ habitat.

GeoPlanner supports every step in the design workflow for Geodesign and is an addition to the ArcGIS platform. Built on ArcGIS Online, it leverages web maps and can be used in infrastructure design, public safety, and planning of all kinds. GeoPlanner can be put on the portal so everyone involved can use it.

In the case of JGI, they use GeoPlanner to track the habitat of chimps and gorillas. They can bring in their own data, and see what habitat remains unprotected. If building and hunting encroach on the habitat, it will no longer be able to support the great apes.

The human impact can also be considered in this equation, such as proximity to roads, hunting and infrastructure. The conservation priority can be determined by using various data in the GeoPlanner map. GeoPlanner allows for decision makers to sketch design proposals. Templates are already available in GeoPlanner, yet users can create their own.
