TomTom partnerships extend location based services

March 12th, 2013 by Susan Smith

TomTom spokesperson Lea Armstrong talked about TomTom’s recent announcements, which include the extension of its longstanding partnership with leading PND supplier MiTAC International Corporation. Under the global agreement, TomTom will provide a range of world-class navigational services for use in all of the PND brands owned by MiTAC including Mio, Navman and Magellan.

TomTom also announced an agreement to supply maps and road data to location-based services provider Telmap. With this partnership, Telmap, an Intel company, will utilize TomTom content to enhance its products and services, including mobile navigation apps distributed via application stores and mobile operators worldwide.

GISCafe Voice: How will this relationship with MiTAC be extended?

This is an extended service agreement from 2009 for another 3 years. The agreement covers EMEA, APAC, & Mexico for me, as well as the USA and Canada for Magellan.

GISCafe Voice: Did Telmap have an existing relationship with TomTom and if so, how did that differ from the current partnership?

No

GISCafe Voice: How will TomTom benefit from the relationship with Telmap?

TomTom contents will be used in Telmap mobile navigation applications provided directly to end users via Application Stores or to mobile operators. Telmap will also make this data available, through APIs, to third-party developers via Intel’s AppUp developer program. App developer participating in the Intel developers program will now be able to leverage Telmap’s locations-based services capabilities and TomTom’s maps and road information, to add location related information to their own applications.

Location-enabled content and applications are increasingly important to consumers; by partnering with Telmap, TomTom can provide information to support daily location needs ranging from navigation to search and find for consumers globally.

GISCafe Voice: What do you expect in the future as a result of this relationship with Telmap?

Telmap can now access TomTom data, for a three-year period. Telmap customers in Europe can benefit from TomTom data now, with South African and North American launches to follow soon.
