Geospatial Revolution Project by Penn State Public Broadcasting

February 10th, 2012 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source:

We live in the Global Location Age. “Where am I?” is being replaced by, “Where am I in relation to everything else?”

The Geospatial Revolution Project is an integrated public service media and outreach initiative about the world of digital mapping and how it is changing the way we think, behave, and interact.

Mission

The mission of the Geospatial Revolution Project is to expand public knowledge about the history, applications, related privacy and legal issues, and the potential future of location-based technologies.

Geospatial information influences nearly everything. Seamless layers of satellites, surveillance, and location-based technologies create a worldwide geographic knowledge base vital to solving myriad social and environmental problems in the interconnected global community. We count on these technologies to:

  • fight climate change
  • map populations across continents, countries, and communities
  • track disease
  • strengthen bonds between cultures
  • assist first responders in protecting safety
  • enable democracy
  • navigate our personal lives

Episode 1

The first episode covers what is involved in the geospatial revolution, the origins of mapping and geospatial technology, and a look at the use of crisis mapping in Haitian earthquake relief efforts.

TEDxPhilly Talk by Amy Hillier – Mapping experiences and access to opportunity in cities

February 8th, 2012 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source:

A pressing issue for Amy Hillier: Why does the place of our birth and child rearing influence the amount of opportunities available to us as adults? Is there something we can do about this? If we could trace our experiences using modern mapping technologies – like GIS, GPS, LiDAR and others – to better understand our surroundings, our history and our future, what would be revealed? Hillier’s talk discusses how Augmented Reality technologies can be used to bridge geographic disparities and facilitate neighborhood change, allowing residents to redefine their space. Gamifying neighborhoods can engage kids with activities that lead to personal discovery, while also providing data on what Hillier calls “opportunity-shed analysis.”

Charlie Fitzpatrick on Geospatial Skills – a TEDxYouth Talk

January 31st, 2012 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source:

This is a TEDxYouth talk by Charlie Fitzpatrick for K-12 students.

Charlie Fitzpatrick is Manager of K12 Education for Esri, a company based in Redlands, CA, that makes geographic information system (“GIS”) software. Charlie was trained in Minnesota as a geographer and teacher. He taught social studies in grades 7-12 for 15 years, with most time in 8th grade (by choice). He spent free time helping teachers learn how to teach with computers (especially geography), and directed multi-week teacher institutes on that for IBM and the National Geographic Society. In 1992, he shifted to Esri to help administrators, teachers, and students learn about the many layers of the world, global to local, and solve problems through geographic analysis. Geospatial technology is a fast-growing arena, and Esri’s sole business is GIS, because people with geospatial skills are needed in every single industry, in governments, businesses, and agencies all over the world.

City of Charlotte uses GIS for public service

January 26th, 2012 by Sanjay Gangal

Article Source: Charlotte, North Carolina Government

This is an interesting video preaching GIS for government functions including public safety and other examples from Charlotte, North Carolina. Here is an excerpt:

“You could call it a digital swiss army knife, handy for many tasks, or you might think of it as a high tech method of “getting your act together” across time and distance. However you see it, GIS (Geographic Information System) is a big deal growing bigger. Combining geography with data from other collaborating disciplines creates a tool for solving previously mind boggling problems….”
