In a cozy, tucked-away corner at the bustling Trimble Dimensions Conference in Las Vegas, I sat down with Karl Bradshaw and Gareth Gibson, both of whom play pivotal roles in shaping the trajectory of Trimble’s geospatial and reality capture technologies. Bradshaw, the Market Manager for Mobile Mapping, and Gibson, the Marketing Director for Mapping & GIS Solutions, came armed with an infectious enthusiasm and an array of details about Trimble’s latest innovation: the Trimble MX60. It was clear from our conversation that for them, the MX60 wasn’t just another product—it was a leap forward in the way we understand and interact with the physical world around us.

The Trimble MX60 offers improved positioning and optics, making it ideal for transportation infrastructure and road analysis and comprehensive asset management for utilities.

Bradshaw wasted no time in setting the stage. “Reality capture has evolved tremendously within Trimble,” he began. “We’re moving beyond static methods and into a realm where the devices do much of the heavy lifting. With the MX60, we’ve created a platform that collects mass data and makes it available for a range of practical applications.” He elaborated on how the MX60’s mobile mapping capabilities allow it to capture high-definition images and detailed 3D point clouds with stunning accuracy. The camera system, he emphasized, was a key development for utility companies, municipalities, and other sectors dependent on reliable asset data.

Reichard highlighted the core data challenges faced by owners of capital improvement projects, particularly those relying on outdated legacy systems. These older systems often involve proprietary data formats and analog processes that hinder efficiency. “Most of the current technology used by agencies is legacy-based,” Reichard noted. “This means older architectures and proprietary data formats that limit interaction and create unnecessary steps.”

These inefficiencies can result in significant operational cost overruns, with Reichard estimating an 8% to 15% float in costs due to outdated systems. Trimble’s Unity software suite is designed to tackle these issues head-on by streamlining processes and integrating with existing systems to reduce these cost burdens.

GIS-Centric Integration for Seamless Operations

At the heart of Trimble Unity’s effectiveness is its deep integration with Esri’s ArcGIS, a leading geospatial platform. Reichard emphasized that rather than reinventing the wheel, Trimble chose to build on existing, proven technologies. “Unity Maintain, part of our Unity suite, is highly integrated into ArcGIS,” he explained. “Mapping and geolocation are built into the system, making it intuitive and user-friendly.”

This integration is not just about ease of use; it’s about ensuring that data is where it needs to be when it needs to be there. Trimble Unity’s open architecture supports the use of modern API stacks, ensuring interoperability with a wide range of tools and systems, both Trimble and non-Trimble. This open approach allows agencies to leverage their existing technology investments while enhancing their capabilities with Trimble’s advanced solutions.

Trimble DSS 500: Flexible and Efficient Mapping Solution

In October 2012, Trimble announced that launch of its DSS 500, which is the company’s latest medium-format, directly georeferenced aerial imaging system.

Capable of producing full-resolution, ortho-rectified imagery in real time with In-FlightOrtho™ technology, the Trimble Digital Sensor System (DSS) is designed as a high-productivity, mapping-grade solution for color orthophoto and vertical mapping applications.

“The DSS 500 with In-FlightOrtho pushes the limits of efficiency like no other medium-format aerial mapping system,” said Joe Hutton, director of Airborne Products at Applanix, a Trimble Company, in the press release launching the new product.  “The DSS 500’s ability to produce full-resolution, orthorectified imagery as it is captured makes it an ideal solution for air-to-ground quality control and time-critical mapping. Watching the orthos produced in real time gives users extremely high levels of confidence in their data collection. And now with significantly smaller, lighter, lower power and less complex hardware—just three cables are required for most installations—aerial mapping has never been easier, faster or more efficient. It is the most advanced Digital Sensor System that we have ever produced.”
