New GIS system to help locate storm victims

June 21st, 2012 by Susan Smith

Knowing where a person storm shelter is located is critical to being able to locate victims trapped in them after a tornado like the one that tore through Franklin County, Alabama on April 27th, 2011. A new GIS mapping system will help locate victims trapped in personal storm shelters.

Using a handheld device, Franklin County Geographical Information System or GIS Manage, Michael Hughes plugs in data that will allow emergency crews to pinpoint exactly where a storm shelter sits.

People could go for days without someone finding them, unless they have relatives who would check in on them regularly.

The GIS includes layers of data and in an emergency, first responders access the informationto  make sure every shelter gets checked for storm victims.  Crews can print out maps or view a digital copy.

Hughes says there are hundreds of storm shelters in the county that need to be mapped.

If you want your shelter added to the system, contact Hughes at the Franklin County Highway Department or Bill Fuller at Russellville City Hall.
