Geospatial data is one of the most critical elements for infrastructure improvement projects and asset management. The GIS provides context for where infrastructure is placed, its attributes, topography, maintenance history, and much more. These attributes track an asset’s performance and catalog its proximity to other assets. Trimble Cityworks adds to this context by providing historical activity of when and how the infrastructure was placed, what type of work has been performed against the infrastructure, and the ability to identify the encompassing business risk should that infrastructure fail. With its platform architecture, Cityworks is able to consume various sources of data which inform organizations and assist with smart and efficient planning as stewards within their communities.
Cityworks was acquired by Trimble in 2019. It is built as a GIS-centric, platform-based software for asset management and permitting across the asset lifecycle with added capabilities for project management, contract management, and activity-based solutions. Cityworks, alongside e-Builder, a Trimble Solution that integrates on the platform, provides comprehensive asset management from the permitting phase through building and inspection into operations and maintenance.
Recently within Trimble, a new sector was created that is specifically focused on owners of infrastructure and the public sector. The Owner & Public Sector includes Cityworks and e-Builder along with Trimble Utilities and AgileAssets, which specializes in pavement management. These solutions are positioned as part of the construction sector with a focus on the public sector to and are focused on completing and fulfilling the different stages of the design, build, and operate process to provide a comprehensive GIS-centric solution for the public sector. In this final installment of GISCafe Voice Industry Predictions for 2022, we can see more of multiple topics geospatial will need to address in the coming years. Whether countries are developing or not, they will have levels of requirements for automation and geospatial technology. Tersus and HSR Health outline the need for geospatial technology in the areas of farming, healthcare, disease management, safety and construction. These are exciting times for those developing new ways of addressing old and new challenges.

Two weeks ago our Industry Predictions took a look at NVIDIA’s foray into geospatial with artificial intelligence and their digital twin of the earth. This week builds on those themes, as Dr Aaron Morris, co-founder of Allvision and Shehzan Mohammed, Director of 3D Engineering and Ecosystems, Cesium peer into the crystal ball to find AI and Machine Learning (ML) making a significant impact on GIS of the future.
GeoSapient looks forward to the improvement of sustainability through environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency and industry collaboration. And to weave it all together, according to John Kelly, president and co-founder of GeoSapient, digital twin technology with ESG “will help the operators place themselves at the center of a sustainable supply chain and trace specific products to their final use.” (more…)

Much of 2021’s important news had to do with digital twin technology, responding to climate change and artificial intelligence, as well as Covid-19 response for businesses. Reducing the world’s carbon footprint is a major priority for most organizations and technologies are being lined up to address this priority.

Recent years have seen increase in hurricanes and subsequent flood damage to property throughout the U.S. due to climate change. CoreLogic® a leading global property information, analytics and data-enabled solutions provider, this week released its 2021 Hurricane Report, providing analysis of single- and multifamily residences along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and revealing nearly 8 million homes with more than $1.9 trillion in combined reconstruction cost value (RCV) are at risk of storm surge. This year’s report also examines hurricane wind and reveals more than 31 million homes with nearly $8.5 trillion in combined RCV have moderate or extreme risk exposure to hurricane winds.

Looking forward to 2021 brings with it a necessary looking backward at what geospatial organizations and providers have had to deal with in 2020. On a regular basis throughout the next two months, GISCafe Voice will post industry predictions from professional geospatial organizations, looking at what vectors are influencing the industry and what directions the technologies will take. This week we will hear from spokespeople from Maptek, Nearmap, Septentrio and Sinclair Industries. Autonomous solutions, partnering with other technology providers, mapping critical care centers such as testing centers, cybersecurity and increased accuracy and analytics are all areas that geospatial and mapping have stepped up to as a result of Covid-19. The technology was there, ready to meet the sudden and unanticipated demand. What does that mean going forward? Greater resilience and growth, innovation at a more rapid pace, and much more, according to these industry professionals.
