ABI Research reports rise in cellular GNSS IC revenue

​The GNSS IC market continues to go from strength to strength with Cellular GNSS IC revenue alone forecast to break $2 billon by 2016, with a host of secondary markets starting to emerge, according to a report by ABI Research. This may help to explain why both Intel and Samsung have recently acquired GNSS IC design capabilities, creating competition for incumbents like Broadcom, Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Wearables, in-store advertising, ambient intelligence, IoE/IoT and connected homes have created a buzz around indoor location. Before indoor location can really happen, however, GNSS is critical to tying together the disparate networks.

Juniper Systems to release rugged notepad to UK market

Josh Egan, product manager for Juniper Systems, talked about the first rugged notepad to the UK market to be released at GEO Business 2014. The Mesa combines the advantages of a PC tablet and a rugged handheld computer, without the disadvantages expected with either. This is the first time the Mesa has been on show at a UK trade event and Juniper Systems will also be hosting a workshop at the event which takes place in London from the 28th to 29th May 2014 titled “How to get the most out of your rugged handheld.”

New partnership between Esri and UNISDR promises to build more resilient cities

Esri and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) have entered into a partnership to build more resilient communities with geospatial technology.

Announced at the Abu Dhabi Ascent conference on Sunday, May 4, the goal if for the two organizations to develop a cooperative program aimed at growing the global community of resilient cities through GIS science and capabilities. This is modeled after the support that Esri is giving to President Obama’s Climate Data Initiative and resilience in the U.S. The partnership with UNISDR will provide support, service and capabialities on a global scale for UNISDR’s existing Making Cities Resilient campaign by providing resources aimed at helping communities advance from planning to implementation.

Explorer for ArcGIS released for iOS devices

Esri released recently Explorer for ArcGIS, the GIS app for everyone to access and share maps on their smartphone and tablet. This app is characterized by being “for everyone”, with its  modern, easy-to-use interface that allows non-GIS professionals to use it right away. Right now the release is available on iOS but an Android version will be available in the future.

Explorer for ArcGIS may require some familiarity with Esri GIS tools. For example, users can access any of their organization’s maps authored in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS. These users are able to search for information about their assets, find out where their assets are in relation to their current location, and share that information easily with whomever they want to know the information. Maps can be shared several ways including text message, email and AirDrop and other methods.

Pitney Bowes and INRIX enter into multi-year partnership

Senior vice-president and general manager of Intelligent Location Solutions of Pitney Bowes Software, James Buckley, spoke recently about the company’s entrance into a multi-year limited partnership with INRIX, Inc., a leading provider of traffic information and driver services. The purpose of the partnership is to deliver advanced Location Intelligence solutions through the company’s traffic intelligence platform.

The two firms will integrate the location capabilities of Pitney Bowes with the traffic analysis of INRIX, ultimately improving the driving experience of those drivers who are connected by in-car navigation as well as mobile apps. INRIX has a mobile app, which will allow users to make better location-based decisions in a real time fashion. (more…)

Bentley Systems 2013 annual revenues announced

On April 16, Bentley Systems announced its 2013 annual results in a press call. Bentley is a private company and uses the opportunity to highlight its annual accomplishments such as its involvement in trends and new products. Bentley is a leader in the market in the areas of electric power generation, electric power transmission, distribution and communications; water and wastewater distribution, EPC and AEC, and mining and metals. Bentley’s geospatial offerings are integrated into many of the above market areas.

New features of CityCAD

Holistic City Limited has just announced their latest release of CityCAD, version 2.6.

Several sharp improvements characterize this release as well as stability and performance upgrades:

  • New samples have been added to the settings library (different kinds of residential and mixed-use blocks with a variety of detailed building perimeter objects) to make it easier to get up and running quickly.

Brian Sahr, Future Product Marketing Manager, HP LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions, talked last week about the new release of the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M476 color laser device, delivering simple wireless printing from smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, available this spring. The new MFP M476 addresses the following four key trends in the industry:

1)   Mobility — A number of workers are going to mobility. 70% of the worldwide workforce is now mobile. That’s changing how people want to interact.

2)    Cloud and big data – Most information now is in the cloud. From the printing and imaging standpoint, customers want to scan to the cloud and bring information into the cloud. (more…)

Esri’s Geotrigger Service now available

Esri announced its cloud-based Geotrigger Service is now available, making it easier for developers to add location awareness and messaging to their iPhone and Android apps. With the Geotrigger Software Development Kit (SDK), mobile apps can send custom messages when a user enters or leaves locations specified by the application developer.
