Bentley Webinar Focuses on Digital Twins

Bentley Systems hosted its Spring Update Conference Call this week about the progress of the company, with a focus on Digital Twin technology. In addition were two product announcements and the acquisition of Keynetix, a UK-headquartered provider of cloud-based software for capturing, visualizing, modeling, and sharing of geotechnical data.

With OpenSite Designer, users can create intelligent 3D models for civil site projects complete with site information, terrain data, parking lots, building pads, driveways, sidewalk, parcel layout and related site features.

GISCafe 2018 Year in Review

Many years ago Marshall McLuhan wrote that “the medium is the message.” Never has that been more true than today as we look at how we receive our information – via our phones, computers, TVs, blogs, podcasts, Twitter and other social media. The Immediacy of the message is now available through those avenues, and serves us well in the form new geospatial technology development – autonomous vehicle technology, data acquisition and analytics, social media mapping and imagery – all of which can be utilized to save time, money and more importantly, save lives.

Hexagon Positioning Intelligence to Acquire AutonomouStuff for Autonomous Vehicle Development

Autonomous vehicle development is front and center in the news these days, with geospatial companies working hard to provide the autonomous technology necessary to populate the world’s highways with safe, responsive robotic vehicles. This technology is also a part of the greater vision for resilient or “smart” cities, as new cities are created or revamped and the desire is to incorporate self-driving vehicles into the fabric of the new infrastructure.

Pay-as-you-Go GIS Cloud Mapping Platform Map Mavin Lets You Make and Share Web Maps in Minutes

Katie Nelson, Geospatial Ninja for Apollo Mapping, spoke with GISCafe Voice about their most recent product release, Map Mavin. Apollo Mapping was formed in 2011 and resells satellite imagery from firms such as DigitalGlobe, Airbus and international imagery providers.

Acquisitions, Open Source and Digital Twins

A significant number of acquisitions were announced at the Bentley Year in Infrastructure 2018 conference held in October at the Hilton London Metropole in London. Three of these acquisitions further the new iTwin Services effort.

Bentley’s new open source iModel.js library for web-based immersive visualization will be the vehicle by which the iTwin Services will deliver benefits.

DigitalGlobe Spotlights Human Rights Violations with Satellite Imagery and Geoint

In July 2018, a deeply disturbing and violent video began to circulate on social media. Taking place in Cameroon, it depicts two women and two young children being led at gunpoint away from a village by a group of Cameroonian soldiers. Blindfolded, the victims are forced to the ground and shot 22 times by the soldiers.
