According to Computech president Larry Fitzpatrick, the company was selected by open competition to provide the technology for the National Broadband Map. In concert with the FCC, Computech selected a fully open source geospatial stack which starts with PostGRES at the bottom to OpenGeo and various open source frameworks. Look for an upcoming blog about the technology stack to be posted on the Computech, Inc. site.

MindHelix launches India’s first GPS-based auto-rickshaw fare meter
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011“Kerala-based based MindHelix Technologies on Wednesday launched ‘Tuk Tuk’ meter, claimed to be India’s first GPS-based multi platform Auto fare Calculator that enables the commuter to know the fare to be paid for the distance traversed.
The application enables the commuter to calculate the distance travelled using GPS and calculate the fare due, Christian Emmanuel George, co-founder and CEO of MindHelix Technologies told.”

World Resources Simulation Center
Monday, January 31st, 2011A setting that will benefit sustainable design is the World Resources Simulation Center (WRSC), a proposed immersive visualization facility where people can “see” critical trends and issues and relationships between them – plus consequences of “what if” strategies. It is expected to provide a cooperative environment for governments, business, NGOs and educators.
I met one of the people involved in this effort at the GeoDesign Summit. The facility is not yet built, but they are actively seeking partners, expertise and investment for the project.
Daratech study reports 10.3% rise in Geospatial software and services revenue
Thursday, January 20th, 2011A just released Daratech study reported that sales of GIS/Geospatial software, services and data grew 10.3% to US$4.4 billion in 201o.
The forecast for the coming year is that GIS/Geospatial sales will grow more than 8.3% to almost US$5 billion, according to Daratech’s CEO Charles Foundyller. He attributes the growth to the popularity of Google Earth and consumer navigation systems such as TomTom, linking business and consumer data with geo-enabled apps. This will become the norm, he says.

According to press materials, “The new American FactFinder offers a fresh look, new tools and easier access to a wide range of Census Bureau statistics. Online today, you will find population estimates for 2008 and earlier years and findings from the 2000 Census. When fully implemented, the new FactFinder is projected to have about 250 billion data cells in more than 40,000 tables. “
