More on GeoPlatform.gov

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

A reader wrote in to ask if the data from GeoPlatform.gov was to be served up free of charge, as it isn’t clear from the website whether that is the case. If anyone knows the answer to this, please respond.

GeoPlatform.gov promises near-real time information

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

“The partner agencies of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) are developing a Geospatial Platform to more effectively provide place-based products and services to the American public. The Geospatial Platform will be a managed portfolio of common geospatial data, services, and applications contributed and administered by authoritative sources and hosted on a shared infrastructure.”

On another page of this website, GeoPlatform.gov/gulfresponse offers examples of how NOAA with the EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Interior integrated up-to-date information about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill’s trajectory with wildlife information, place-based locations of oiled shoreline and the positions of research ships into one map.  GeoPlatform.gov/gulfresponse utilizes the Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA®) a web-based GIS platform developed by NOAA and the University of New Hampshire’s Coastal Response Research Center.

This may be a useful venue for volunteer geographic information (VGI).

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
I'm just posting this here for all who are interested:
Trails enthusiasts at the ESRI conference,

Dave Williamson attended our SIG yesterday and he and Chris Wood had some great
experience to share in building the dataset for the Trans Canada Trail. His
talk about the Trail, bumped from yesterday, has been rescheduled:

The new time:
5:20 pm Wednesday, July 14, at the Climate Change Demo Theatre

No doubt the experience he'll share will benefit and inform your own work on
trails. See you there!

What’s going on at ESRI UC this week?

Monday, July 12th, 2010

This time of year my internal clock is set for ESRI UC, as I have attended every year for the past eleven years. This year however, I am not there. I feel a little strange, as though something is missing, and it is. Usually, I look forward to ESRI because of the plenary session, keynotes, the speakers, the educational focus, the vast numbers of people I meet and network with, seafood, and the San Diego sea breeze that is so refreshing compared to New Mexico mid-summer dry heat.

Instead of being there, this year I invite readers to tell me how it’s going, write into my blog or to my email address giscafe-editor@IBSystems.com to tell me what is worthwhile, hot, a new trend, or otherwise exciting news.

Rather than writing my usual recap of the conference each day I’m there, this may be a recap of what attendees think is important. I will, in the meantime, update readers with what I hear about products from the conference.
