Exciting new technologies from BOXX Technologies were presented at Autodesk University 2011 in Las Vegas in December 2011. GISCafe’s Sanjay Gangal met with Shoaib Mohammad, VP Marketing for BOXX Technologies to talk about what the company offers.
Sanjay: Tell me about Boxx Technologies. Shoaib: This year we have 20×20 booth and we have many presenters using BOXX Technologies. BOXX has been around for little over 10 years, and is based in Austin. We provide the world’s fastest workstations. Instead of designing a single PC product and trying to sell it, we look at the application workflow and design a custom configured workstation according to that particular application requirement. Our liquid-cooled 3DBOXX 4920 XTREME features a second generation, six core, 12-thread Intel Corei7 processor, performance enhanced to reach speeds of up to 4.5 GHz. SSD caching provides increased storage performance and faster access to media files, while additional DIMM sockets for quad channel DDR3 SDRAM deliver faster memory performance. Overall, the 4920 XTREME delivers 50% more processing power for tasks like CPU-based rendering and simulation analysis, as well as the highest application interactivity and responsiveness among single processor workstations. It is a single processor workstation, with 12 different cores from Intel that we can use. The workstations are used by architects and mechanical designers. We provide workstations for the media and entertainment industry. Last few year we branched out in to Architecture and Engineering as the requirements grew from 2D to 3D. Our solutions are used in small to very large enterprises. If you have seen movies such as Matrix and Avatar, they used our workstations for development work, they also designed custom rendering nodes both for CPU rendering and GPU rendering. Sanjay: What is special about the workstations? Shoaib: We believe there is no square peg in a round hole, there is no one turnkey solution for everything. One third of our customers use 3ds Max, so we look at how much memory the application uses, multi-threading, and we take Intel or NVIDIA and off-the-shelf technology, we use liquid cooling and we over clock it, we custom design our own chassis and manufacture everything in the U.S. Sanjay: How much faster are your workstations? Shoaib: Off-the-shelf our 3DBOXX 4920 XTREME workstations are 20-30% faster than competitors and we can over clock memory, quad GPU or multi GPU solutions. We are showing a demo of the upcoming “GPU-BOXX”, PCoIP remote desktop computing “GPU-BOXX”, PCoIP remote desktop computing which allows developers to add four more GPUs next to their workstation, and 3DBOXX 4880 XTREME, a performance enhanced quad GPU workstation. We look at ourselves as a productivity solution provider instead of just a hardware provider.
