Yahoo has had a bumpy ride during the past year as far as keeping executives at the helm and boosting revenues. Just last September former Autodesk CEO, Carol Bartz, was ousted from her position as CEO of Yahoo, followed by Scott Thompason who was forced out in May for padding his resume. The interim CEO, Ross Levinsohn, was thought to be next in line for the job.
Instead Marissa Mayer, a top exec from Google, has been appointed CEO by Yahoo this past week. “I am honored and delighted to lead Yahoo, one of the internet’s premier destinations for more than 700 million users,” Mayer said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the company’s dedicated employees to bring innovative products, content, and personalized experiences to users and advertisers all around the world.” Mayer represents a big step up for Yahoo, which is in head to head competition with Google and Facebook. Mayer joined Google in 1999 as Employee # 20, so she has extensive experience with the search engine company. At 37, Mayer has been a prominent spokesperson for Google at major tech conferences. The company’s most inflential products such as Gmail, Google News and Google Images, hold her imprimatur. Additionally she was put in charge of Google Maps and location services. During the first quarter of 2012, Yahoo posted revenue of $1.077 billion, representing just a 1 percent increase over the year-earlier period. That relatively flat revenue figure resulted from a 4 percent decrease in display advertising revenue and an 8 percent increase in search revenue. This will definitely be challenging for Mayer.
