I’m looking forward to this one: Esri has developed an application to better access and manipulate maps from the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection.
The USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer has the capability to let users to access the historical maps as high resolution georeferenced images for use in web mapping apps and also features a timeline so they can easily select the desired maps. The HTMC contains more than 178,000 legacy maps scans dating from late 1884 to 2006. The ability to bring the HTMC maps into a GIS environment plus many other improvements is part of this capability. My guess is we will hear about this at Esri User Conference in a week and a half.
