Voyager Search Combines Modern Search Engine with Spatial Technology

Brian Goldin, CEO and founder of Voyager Search and formerly of Esri, recognizes that geospatial systems amass a tremendous amount of data. “A lot of solutions for helping people understand data haven’t evolved very well,” said Goldin. “By taking some modern web search technology and combining it with geospatial data, we can allow someone to install some software for dealing with their data without impacting their work in their existing IT environments.”

Voyager Search, the combination of modern search and spatial technologies, is easy to install and fits into the existing IT environment. Customers can build a catalog and then Voyager can help them inventory assess what they have, understand patterns within their data, give them analytics to help them understand data usage, help them with capital forecasts and planning for purchasing more data, to make it available for their customers. Voyager Search can also build a front end for helping employees find, share and use data, to help them improve their productivity.

Modeled after Amazon Search, Voyager Search has recently expanded to include non-spatial data. For organizations who want to add search to their IT, this is a way to do this with all their content and also includes features such as geotagging, enriching metadata, and linking together content housed in remote offices. Voyager can read 1600+ file formats, and can add others as needed. During indexing, content is run through Voyager’s indexing pipelines to accomplish many tasks such as geotagging, labeling, metadata transformation, character recognition, labeling, and custom services. Once the content is indexed, the content can be sorted, searched and explored in a lot of different ways.

“Our markets are really broad, and managing data fits across almost any industry: oil and gas mining, defense and intelligence space, also the federal civilian area, such as DOI and BLM,” said Goldin.

Voyager works with Oracle, SQL Server and many other database systems, document management systems, file systems and Web services such as ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, WMS, WFS, FME Server, Geocortex and CSW.
