Pointfuse Space Creator Toolkit Facilitates Laser Scanning for Indoor Mapping

March 6th, 2020 by Susan Smith

Pointfuse, a powerful modeling engine that delivers an automatic, precise and flexible way of converting the vast point cloud datasets generated by laser scanners or photogrammetry into segmented mesh models, has launched a new toolkit called Space Creator. Pointfuse Space Creator is designed to facilitate adopting laser scanning within space management, planning and utilization workflows.

Pointfuse Space Creator

For space planning, the new Pointfuse Space Creator automates the conversion of features such as walls, doors and windows to BIM LOD 200, and is compatible with the latest mobile mapping systems that are being used consistently for as-built and as-used surveys for facilities management.

Users of Pointfuse software are familiar with its ability to convert the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into useable 3D models. The unique ability to classify objects within Pointfuse, both automatically and manually, has already had a huge impact on how as-built data is used. The addition of Space Creator, makes it possible for Pointfuse users to realize real time records for space utilization and optimization projects by deskilling and streamlining workflows, thus reducing project costs.

The advanced statistical techniques Pointfuse uses to create 3D models makes it possible for individual surfaces to be selected and classified as new layers in the Pointfuse environment and exported to IFC and FBX for manipulation in any industry-standard CAD system. The use of mobile mapping is bringing the GIS and AEC industries together in exciting new ways.

Pointfuse ‘Space Creator’ leverages the core functionality of Pointfuse – the segmented mesh model; automatically converting classified mesh models into ‘family’ groups, such as walls, floors, doors, windows, etc. for use with popular downstream BIM and FM software. Space Creator is used with laser capturing systems such as GeoSLAM ZEB REVO or Leica BLK2GO.

“Mobile mapping systems that are optimized for indoor use are increasingly being used to rapidly capture up to date data for space management, planning and utilization,” commented Mark Senior, Regional Sales Director at Pointfuse. “However the resulting point clouds can still present problems due to complexity and size. With Space Creator we are removing these barriers making data easy to use and easy to share.”

Mike Deacon, Technical Sales Manager, Pointfuse Ltd spoke with GISCafe Voice about the features of the Pointfuse Space Creator.

What is BIM LOD 200?

LOD 200 is a BIM level – it is relatively simple and assumes all things are built plumb and square.

What is the significance of being able to automate the conversion of features to BIM LOD 200?

Automating the conversion means that the process of creating BIM models can be performed by users of all abilities, as Professional modeling services are expensive and time consuming. This means that producing these simple outputs over a large area can be performed easily, perfect for space management workflows.

What types of mobile mapping systems is Pointfuse compatible with? Are they GIS systems?

Pointfuse processes data output by laser capturing systems that produce point clouds. For Space Creator, we specifically mean handheld mobile scanners which are increasingly used indoors to do walkabout surveys. E.g. the GeoSLAM ZEB REVO or the Leica BLK2GO

How long does it typically take to convert the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into useable 3D models with Pointfuse? How long would it ordinarily take without it?

It reduces the time taken to deliverable by as much as 70 percent and that can mean days into hours.  Previously laser scanning was not viable for many projects due to the enormous file sizes and processing times.  Pointfuse is therefore particularly well suited to dealing with outputs from the new generation of handheld scanners.  These are opening up new areas for scanning (less costly, more portable, easier) such as as-built surveys.

File size of 3D models created from point clouds is greatly reduced in Pointfuse. The data density within each surface is reduced while simultaneously still maintaining the fidelity of the model. The resulting model is much smaller in size, making it easier to manage, faster and more efficient.

What is a typical workflow for users using Space Creator with a mobile mapping systems?

Capturing internal buildings, producing the output with Space Creator, and then uploading the LOD 200 BIM model into a facilities management system, such as Archibus.

Is this used for outdoor spaces as well or just indoor spaces?

Space Creator is best deployed in interior spaces.

Is there an additional cost for Space Creator or does it come with the Pointfuse software?

100,000 sq ft of Space Creator is included within the software.  More sqft export bundles can be purchased additionally.
