Cityworks OpX 1.0 Makes It Possible to Quickly Initiate Projects During Disasters and Emergency Management Events

July 30th, 2021 by Susan Smith

Recently Becky Tamashaky, Vice President of Product Vision at Cityworks, conducted a video interview with Sanjay Gangal from GISCafe.

She offered some additional information on some of the topics covered in the following interview for GISCafe Voice:

  1. What are the specific new functionalities of the new OpX 1.0?

Cityworks has historically had tools for project management, contract management and activity-based budgeting. This first release of OpX brings the existing project management tools into an updated interface with enhanced query engines, comprehensive activity and financial summaries, and a spatial view. With iterative releases, the capabilities of contract management and budgeting will be incorporated with consolidated details and an overview to simplify the financial tracking for organizations.

  1. What makes it more geospatial?

OpX makes it easy to view the infrastructure associated with projects, their location on the map and the project silhouette which illustrates the full area encompassed by the project.

  1. When you refer to “synchronized dashboards”, do you mean financial tied to other aspects that are part of the business?

The new project details provide users with a consolidated view from the financial transactions across capital, O&M and permitting, along with the development and work activities.

  1. Who in the company is able to access the OpX 1.0? Does it need to be managed by a GIS consultant?

OpX 1.0 Financials Contracts Map

OpX has been designed as an application that can be utilized by any staff in the organization responsible for project, contract or budget management and the need for the complete financial landscape.

  1. How is it useful for disaster response and recovery?

OpX makes it possible for organizations to quickly initiate projects during disasters and emergency management situations and associate disaster recovery inspections and clean up and repair work activities. With core functionality in Cityworks, crews can easily track labor, material and equipment costs, pictures and videos for reporting and reconciliation in a way that ensures a more complete and responsive reimbursement.

  1. How do you see geospatial fitting into infrastructure improvement projects and the role of CityWorks in that?

    OpX 1.0 Assets Map

Geospatial is one of the most critical elements for infrastructure improvement projects in that it provides the full context of where the infrastructure is placed, the attributes of the infrastructure, the topography that affects it’s performance and its proximity to other assets. Layered with that is the role of Cityworks which provides historical activity of when and how the infrastructure was placed, what type of work has performed and encompassing business risk should that infrastructure fail. These sources of data inform organizations and assist with smart and efficient planning as stewards within their communities.

  1. Is the project silhouette a construct of Esri or Cityworks?

The project silhouette is actually an Esri feature – which enables others across the organization who are not Cityworks users to view the project area.

  1. What did you need to do to beef up your integration with 3D for use with Esri?

OpX 1.0 Project Details Map

Cityworks already leverages the ArcGIS JS API for our integrated map viewer and moving to 3D was an extension of these capabilities. In the effort to support 3D, all Cityworks activities are now z-enabled for accurate association within a 3D scene viewer.

  1. What features of ArcGIS Urban coordinate particularly well with OpX 1.0?

With ArcGIS Urban there’s a concept of a “project” that is initiated as new developments are introduced and reviewed. These projects as feature classes can be used as the basis for initiating new projects in OpX as well to provide a seamless experience and ease of maintenance.

  1. What areas of improved integration do you see with the product?

OpX provides an opportunity to not only improve the functionality for project, contract and budget management but also extend the API offerings for integration with additional third party systems that participate in the financial and work activity reporting.
