Research and Markets “GIS Market in U.S. 2012-2016” Report reveals integration as a top topic

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

In a recent Research and Markets Report, “GIS Market in US 2012-2016” the analysts discovered that many GIS vendors in the U.S. are adding integrated GIS solutions to their portfolios to avoid interoperability problems. These solutions are often seen as fully-integrated application in enterprise applications. End-users can integrate GIS solutions with design, analysis, and simulation software. It has become customary for manufacturing companies to integrate GIS solutions into analytical and simulation applications as part of the product life cycle, thereby extending the reach of GIS. Enterprise applications provide companies with asset management, planning, analysis, remote access, distribution of information, and controlling existing IT systems. Those vendors who have a history in providing design, analysis and simulation software from other industry perspectives such as asset management, planning, etc. can take advantage of this trend by integrating GIS directly into their existing product portfolios. (I have just returned from the Bentley Year in Infrastructure Conference in London where integrated GIS solutions was demonstrated).

“The analysts forecast the GIS market in the US to grow at a CAGR of 10.96 percent over the period 2012-2016. One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increasing demand from the Government sector. The GIS market in the US has also been witnessing the development of integrated systems. However, the increasing government regulations and guidelines could pose a challenge to the growth of this market.

Bentley Year In Infrastructure 2013 Geospatial Directions

Monday, November 4th, 2013

Bentley Year in Infrastructure 2013 kicked off Monday, October 28th in London with a series of keynotes by Bentley executives as well as local luminaries. Antony Oliver, editor of New Civil Engineer in the UK, who is moving into the role of ACE consultant, remarked that “London is the home of infrastructure right now,” and there is a lot going on above and below ground, with Crossrail and Network Rail and other large transportation projects that the UK views as an exemplar of how public transportation will develop in the future. I learned in another conversation that the teams who worked on one were moving over to Crossrail after their stint was finished, bringing their incredible knowledge base with them.

Bentley Systems revenues hit $550 million

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Greg Bentley, CEO of Bentley Systems, last week gave an overview of the company’s financial position as a private company. The company’s focus is infrastructure, meaning “everything people build to improve our planet,” according to Mr. Bentley.

Bentley is a “no drama company” when it comes to reporting, said Mr. Bentley. In their 30th year, he said that historical GAP revenues are $550 million. These GAP revenues grew 8% percent in constant currencies, and organic growth grew by 6%.

“Since the majority of revenues are from annual subscription, 75% of our revenues from subscriptions, up from 72% in 2011, and that’s from ongoing relationships, not ‘customers,’” said Mr. Bentley.

Bentley employees (although he doesn’t like to call them employees as they are also investors in the company – “colleagues and family”) own 98% percent of Bentley Systems. They have a global profit sharing plan and a buy-back plan.

Bentley Systems’ Performance for 2011

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Bentley Systems CEO Greg Bentley gave Bentley Systems’ second annual Corporate Update in a conference call last week.

“Bentley Systems’ revenue on an historical gap basis grew 10% to a record $523 million,” said Bentley. Asia was a major driver of this growth, increasing to comprise 19% of total revenue from 16% in 2010.

The software subscription business model accounts for 17% of revenues in 2011. The company’s resilient subscription revenues have enabled them to fully recover from the downturn faster than their competitors and software peers with less volatility and with greater visibility into this coming year.

The subscription business model also benefits the user organization that had invested in their future reuse of infrastructure information modeling through Bentley software. The relative lack of volatility in Bentley Systems’ revenues is good for the company’s stability and reliability and that is, along with subscription elimination of cost barriers for technology adoption and improvement, is good for user organizations.

Cadastral GIS for Mexican municipality

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

What would life be without real estate, and without property taxes and property ownership?

In the municipality of Metepec, Mexico, a province with a population of 214,000, property ownership and taxes have not been the norm.

According to Marco Antonio Vazquez Nava, municipal treasurer, Cadastral and Geographic Information System for Metepec, the municipality’s revenue sharing status has decreased substantially during the last few years.

They needed software for property tax collection. Taxes represent between 4-6% GDP. “There is a huge difference in Latin America,” said Nava. “Property tax in the rest of South America is 4%, but 0% tax is collected in Mexico. The National Institute for Statistics for Mexico (NISM) research shows only 42% of municipalities register property to be taxed.”
