The message of this week’s GEOINT Symposium 2015 – with the theme, “Opening the Aperture, Charting New Paths,” was really about how to utilize the commercial sector for technologies and the move toward offering services to customers. The topics, “less is more,” “moving toward services” and “innovation” all spoke to the need for change in a federal government limited in recent years by budget cuts . This has not diminished the need for geointelligence excellence, however, in fact, in today’s complicated world, the need is even greater.

Recently, GISCafe Voice spoke with R.J. Talyor, vice president of Product Management at Geofeedia. Geofeedia is a patented, cloud-based platform, which searches, analyzes and monitors real time social media posts from any geographic location globally.

In a couple of recent GeoFeedia case studies, the platform has been used to uncover drug use and distribution among teens at parties in the Los Angeles area, involving the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the FDA. In one other instance, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Division Basketball Tournament was already very active in social media, but needed a better way to cut through the noise on social media and discover and engage with social media users posting at specific locations of interest across Indianapolis. They were able to get up and running quickly on the GeoFeedia platform and draw perimeters around key locations, from which they gathered rich geo-tagged social media data in a matter of minutes. Consequently, the team was able to use GeoFeedia to make sure the fans had a good fan experience, and that counterfeit passes were aborted, as well as that tournament title sponsors receive high returns on their investment.

Last week media trekked to Autodesk’s new Innovation and Design Building in the heart of Boston for the Autodesk AEC Media Summit. While the previous LEED Gold headquarters in Waltham, Mass. was a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable design, the Innovation and Design Building speaks to their branching out in their innovative capacities.

Over the weekend, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal near the city of Kathmandu, followed by aftershocks that also resulted in many deaths and structural damage. Simultaneously, climbers on Mount Everest’s base camp were buried in an avalanche, precipitated by the quake.
The following are some sites that provide some geospatial insight into the events. I’m leaving the links whole in most cases so that they are easy for people to access and will add others as I learn about them. If anyone has any other links that should be added to this list, please contact me at susan.smith@ibsystems.com.

I was pleased to hear about this White House announcement that the First Lady will join students from across the country to plant the White House Kitchen Garden for the seventh year in a row. In 2009, Mrs. Obama planted a vegetable garden on the South Lawn to initiate a national conversation around the health and wellbeing of our nation—a conversation that evolved into her Let’s Move! initiative.

In recent years, Emergency Response and Recovery has been tasked with addressing the growing number of natural disasters and manmade disasters worldwide. When a disaster happens, the role of GIS and geospatial is front and center in the identification of location and the location of individuals impacted in the event, as well as the clarification of the physical damage to vital structures. It is also fundamental to the provision of medical care and utilities during a time when those things may be scarce or non-existent.
