Following the Route of Climate Migrants

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

Climate Migrants is an Esri Story Map that tells the story of people misplaced geographically by climate change and in some cases, other change factors. Allan Carroll of Esri and his team wanted to create a climate change map that was oriented toward people.

The primary goal of the team is to produce apps that enable other people to tell stories. An analysis report by the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. was an influence in the development of the Story Map, which charts what factors contribute to people becoming “climate migrants.” In some cases, such as Syria and Darfur, droughts have precipitated migrations and led to violence and war.

“Some like these, are caused by both climate change and political indicators, sometimes by shortsighted government policies, but climate is a factor in all of them,” said Carroll.

Esri’s Halloween Story Map tells a dark story of the famous and infamous

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

If you’re feeling particularly ghoulish, Esri’s “Where Are the Bodies?” story map is offered just in time for Halloween, documenting the final resting places of some of the most famous (and infamous) actors, artists, authors, and criminals. From Al Capone to Andy Warhol, and many more, learn more about each individual and interactively explore high-resolution imagery for the cemetery or burial site where they’re interred.

You can scroll through the alphabetical list to see each entry, or you can click one of the buttons on the right side to jump to a specific person.

From Esri: world’s first “scratch-and-sniff” interactive story map

Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

Nice to see Esri has a sense of humor with it’s Happy April Fool’s Day offering – the world’s first “scratch-and-sniff” interactive story map. The map allows you to navigate through a list of scents from around the world. These Datastory ScentMaps are built on Esri’s ArcGIS Online technology.

Scents may be valuable in determining which apartment to rent, or where you might decide to put your next office. I don’t think we need a map to determine which restaurant to eat at, if we get close enough to the location.
